We have painted just about every other room in the house but not this one; the room that I could not stand. Finally, just shy of three years of ownership later, the bathroom is getting an update!
Last summer I painted the vanity cabinet with the Rust-Oleum Cabinet Transformation kit. The espresso color, I believe, that we had left over from when I painted the kitchen cabinets. All the cabinets in the house were white melamine. They got dirty quickly and showed every speck of that dirt! They needed to go. Replacing the cabinets wasn't in the budget, in the kitchen or bathrooms. I stumbled upon the Rust-Oleum product on Pinterest (love that site!) I knew it was the answer to our cabinet dilemma. I went to Home Depot to check it out. The worker at the paint counter said they recently used it right there on the counter. It looked great, he said it was easy... I was sold! I purchased my kit and I was off.
There was a good bit left over after the kitchen, so I decided to paint both the cabinets in the master and spare bathrooms. The darker brown color really makes the lighter counter top pop. It looked great! But that was as far as the bathroom would go on updating, until now!
I was shopping at our local Home Goods and found two awesome shower curtains. I didn't know which one to buy, so I bought them both! I brought them home to show off to Christian and get his opinion. {I should say here, that I ask Christian's opinion on every large house project. I will generally get a response along the lines of, 'Whatever you want' or 'You want to paint that room again?'. Still I continue to ask.} He liked both shower curtains also. We had guests coming over that next weekend so we tossed the shower curtains into a closet to discuss later. Two months later, we decided on this beauty and returned the other.

Now to pick the wall color. I am in love with grey currently. I love that it is neutral and you can toss some beautiful colored accessories into the mix for personality. The bathroom is small, so I wanted to try to make it seem larger then it really is. During one of my many daily visits to Pinterest (seriously addicted!), I found some pins of board and batten like this one.

I approached the idea with Christian, he liked it. I immediately started thinking logistics. How high did I want it to go? How far apart should the boards be? What about the outlets and light switches? How would we cut the wood (we only own a hand saw)? Could I really do this?! I have been dying to start some larger projects and this was a starting point. I have to do it to prove that I can do these large projects myself. No need to hire anyone here!
Once I finished playing twenty questions, I got down to business. I took my shower curtain and went to Home Depot to check out paint colors. I decided on Behr's Gentle Rain in satin for the top portion of the wall and Behr's Polar Bear in satin for the bottom portion.

While at Home Depot, I took a look at the different molding choices. We haven't bought any materials for the board and batten yet, but I really like this product. It's pre-primed MDF, ready for installation.

I am thinking I will start the board and batten 52" from the floor. By having this number in my head, I will know how far down to paint. I can't wait to start this project! It has been a long time coming! Check back for updates!
Can't wait to see how your board and batten turns out! I want to do something similar in our guest bedroom (well, once we strip the wallpaper in there - not looking forward to that!). I will be looking to you for advice when the time comes!
